Year 5L – Forest School Den Building
Tue 06 Feb 2018Last week it was Year 5L’s turn in the Forest School and the challenge was to build a den/shelter using only items found in the school environment to help. Again there was some fantastic teamwork against the clock as the weather warning kept counting down to the oncoming storm. A few might not have survived the wild winds but at least there was a roof over their heads.
Well done Year 5L

The Victorious Cross Country Squad
Tue 06 Feb 2018As the season finishes well done to all the runners who deservedly received their medals and certificates. Well done also to Gabriel and Ashley who respresented Salford School last saturday in the Manchester Schools Championships and against over a 100 runners in each category finished 15th and 26th respectively.
Ashley helped Salford Girls to Second Place overall receiving a medal and Gabriel helped the boys finish 5th overall.
The cross country squad goes from strength to strength each year so here’s looking forward to 2018/19 when we hope to get more of the children involved and place higher in the Salford Schools Championships.

Year 3’s Classical Concert
Fri 02 Feb 2018Today Year 3 took a trip into the bustling center of Manchester to visit Stoller Hall at Chetham’s School of Music. We all enjoyed a wonderful concert, played by an orchestra, of classical music- including the works of Tchaikovsky , Andersen, Mozart and Beethoven. Back at school we had a class vote and decided our favorite arrangement was Garland’s ‘In The Mood’. Year 3 were an example to all the other children there and Miss Sackfield is so proud- a fantastic trip! -

Year 6 – Forest School – Den Building
Fri 26 Jan 2018The Year 6 children were set a challenge today. Creating the atmosphere they had been walking in the wilderness when suddenly they had lost track of time. The sun was going down and night was falling. They desperately needed to get some form of shelter built before the cold and rain may have come.
Using some tarps, lengths of rope, wooden sticks, branches and whatever else the children could find they had forty minutes to create their dens. With some fantastic teamwork, bartering for items to use and the odd raids on other groups they all created some great dens.
This involved absolutely no help from adults and was all the children’s own work. Well done all of Year 6.

Bikeability Safer Cycling Week
Thu 25 Jan 2018Year 5C have been enjoying their Bikeability Safer Cycling lessons this week. After an evaluation in the playground on Monday it was time to hit the roads around the school and learn the all important signals, maneuvers and awareness. The Bikeability team were really impressed with all of the children with a significant number achieving the Level 2 certificate.
Now that the weather will be turning, getting lighter and warmer we will hopefully see more children out on the roads or cycling to school.

Cross Country Stars
Tue 23 Jan 2018The final race in the Salford Schools Championship was at Buile Hill last Saturday. It was a really good turn out and again the athletes have excelled and shown such progression from when we started training. Over 20 runners attended almost every training session and the seven races this year which is fantastic. These children have shown great tenacity, dedication and enthusiasm in every training session to race. Some of the races were run in Arctic weather conditions but still they braved it. So a big thank you from Mr Chadwick to all the parents and Miss Crawshaw who was invaluable in stepping in and coordinating races on her own at times and without her the children may not have been able to race..
We must also be proud of two of our Year 5 runners, Ashlee Freilinger and Gabriel McComb who came Second overall in their respective categories. They have now been chosen to represent Salford School in the Greater Manchester Championship on the 3rd February at Heaton Park – First race starts at 11am. It is a great achievement for both Ashlee and Gabriel as they only started running in the club last year. Well done to you both and if you would like to join in supporting them both we’ll see you on the 3rd

The Best World Book Day Ever – Our book is published!
Tue 23 Jan 2018Before Christmas Year 5L and 5C worked with the author, Sarah Oliver, to create the story lines for a new book, The Best World Book Day Ever. Working in groups the children had to devise the stories, using props, imagination, different genres and themes to talk all about a book day. The aim of the book is to inspire children to read different genres which could be newspapers, magazines, online articles, fiction and non-fiction books.
Sarah took the children’s work away and worked with the illustrator to create the finished article. And here it is! Today the children read the book with Sarah and then as all new book launches require: signed a few copies and the picture mount which will be displayed in the school.
Well done the budding authors and hopefully all will be inspired to get their names on future best sellers lists.

Poet Tony Walsh Visits St. Mary’s
Mon 22 Jan 2018Today was a very exciting day at St. Mary’s, as local renowned poet Tony Walsh visited us for poetry workshops. Firstly in assembly Tony recited his famous Manchester poem ‘This Is The Place’, which was wonderfully inspiring. Then the whole school enjoyed an exciting workshop with the poet, where we wrote some fantastic poems which each and every child should be proud of.
