  • Year 6 History: Investigating WWII Evacuee Artefacts

Wed 30 Oct 2019 Mr Loynd

Year 6 had a fascinating afternoon investigating a small suitcase, which had been mysteriously delivered to our classroom.  After examining it closely to work out how old it might be, who it might have belonged to and when it might have been used, we took a look inside...

The suitcase had belonged to a child living during World War II, and was used by that child when he or she was evacuated to the countryside in either 1939 or 1940.  Inside the case, we found essential items such as a child's gas mask, an identity card, a ration book, some coins (which had the head of King George VI on them - he was the monarch at that time), a luggage tag and two toys that wartime children would have been familiar with (a wooden yo-yo and a bag of glass marbles).

From these artefacts we were able to draw some conclusions about what the lives of evacuated children might have been like.

  • Mummification Madness

Mon 28 Oct 2019 Mr Chadwick

Year 3 were learning about the Mummification process in Ancient Egypt today. They have learned that to do this job the Egyptians had to be very skilled at their work or anything could go wrong meaning the dead Pharaoh would not be able to enter the afterlife.

The children had the chance to put the process into action (minus removing the brains and organs of course!) We had varying results with some looking like real Mummies and some requiring an extra bit of work!

  • Cross Country - Race 1 on Saturday is cancelled - TRAINING STILL ON TONIGHT

Mon 28 Oct 2019 Mr Chadwick
Owing to the Rugby World Cup Final on Saturday which England will be hoping to win the decision has been made to cancel the Salford Schools Cross Country Race 1 this Saturday 2nd November.

As some of you have stated the dates have already gone out and a change in date would not work for some schools.  The fairest decision would be to cancel this first race and we will run on a 3 race season.

    The rules therefore will change slightly and it is important that all runners, parents & schools note that the rules now will be;

FINAL TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL RESULTS WILL BE CALCULATED BASED ON ALL 3 REMAINING RACES. THEREFORE TO QUALIFY FOR MEDALS IT WILL BE IMPORTANT TO ATTEND ALL 3 RACES

Apologies to the children who were looking forward to Saturday's race but we hope that you as schools and the parents will support the decision made.
  • Classe Deux Journée Française (Year 2's french day)

  • Savoury Snail Snafflers

Fri 18 Oct 2019 Monsieur Chadwick

What an end to the day for Year 3.

Not content with making and trying food - writing inn French - doing artwork with a french lilt - building French landmarks, they wanted to end our French Day with sampling that iconic French delicacy - snails.

And judging from the faces and the fact that some came back for second and third helpings it was a mixed result and may not be on the School Dinner Menu any time soon...

  • Rugby World Cup Warm Up

Fri 18 Oct 2019 Mr Chadwick

Year 5 & 6 continued the great tradition of having successful rugby teams as they sauntered to four wins out of four in the Salford School Tag Rugby Competition.

We had willing runners, great support, communication, teamwork, sportsmanship and of course Respect. Our opening game was against local rivals, St Mark's and the team romped home two tries with no response.

The next two games were closer but again we scored two tries in each to secure the win and then final game was the trickiest but they never stopped battling at the opponents line and eventually, after having a try disallowed, they went over for the decisive one.

We will be travelling back for the Knock Out rounds in February to face the winners from other groups - but we should do so without any fear.

Well done to all those who took part.

  • Ratatouille - Year 6 Food Technology

Fri 18 Oct 2019 Monsieur Loynd

Year 6 have had a great time this morning preparing and making Ratatouille, a classic French vegetable dish, as part of our French Day celebrations.

"Ratatouille" is a French word meaning "a motley stew", and it has been a staple of French cuisine since 1778!

Whilst there is no precise recipe for ratatouille, it usually consists of pieces of vegetables which are all cooked together.  Our ratatouille contains courgette, peppers, chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic and mixed herbs.

As you can see from our photographs, Year 6 prepared and chopped all of the vegetables ourselves.

We have cooked our ratatouille in a slow cooker, although you can also cook it in a saucepan.  It smells and tastes delicious!

  • Croque Monsieur - Mr Crunch

Fri 18 Oct 2019 Monsieur Chadwick

The French are renowned for their culinary and gastranomic delights so Year 3 took one of their most famous exports (cheese and ham toastie) and made them for a mid morning snack.

We had chefs mixing ingredients, pouring, whisking, slathering and eventually taking them to Head Chef to be oven cooked for 10 minutes before we devoured them.

And they were Absolutement Excellent! So much so that poor Mariella was disappointed to miss out on a second helping!
