  • Sustainable St Mary’s

    Fri 30 Jun 2017

The St Mary’s Allotment Project continues and with the tireless work of Mr Sabatino and the Year 3 planters as you can see the raised beds have been built, filled with high grade soil and now the planting has begun.

Already we have peas, runner beans, corn, cucumbers and strawberries growing. The strawberries have their own home in the brilliantly designed Fiatino tractor. There will be additions to the allotment as it is an on-going project.

We hope to introduce a small poly tunnel for getting the seedlings ready for next year, a water feature and some more benches and chairs so people can relax in the quiet environment.

As the children will be enjoying a hard earned break the allotment would need some tender loving care over summer. If there are any parents willing to drop in from time to time, when the school is open, to just do a spot of weeding or watering that would be fantastic. Of course you may receive payment in kind with some veg.

  • Arts Week – Africa

    Fri 30 Jun 2017

On Monday the children created arts inspired by Africa. We had an African Djembe drumming workshop which was superb. The children had to learn their grooves and work in rhythm. The drums were so brightly and ornately designed that we went straight back to class and designed our own Djembe drums.

  • Arts Week – Asia

    Fri 30 Jun 2017

Continuing the World Tour through Arts the class journeyed through Asia on Tuesday. As we will be researching the Indus Valley Civilisation we decided to create pottery similar to those found at the ancient archaeological sites of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro. The children got their hands dirty with the clay and etched in their own designs.

We then went even calmer and looked at the history of Rangoli patterns and with relaxing music on painted our pictures.

The perfect accompaniment on world travels is none other than a set of top trumps. The children researched animals of Asia and then created their own top trumps with the added bonus of a special feature animal that they have imagined, named and drawn! The bonus card.

  • Arts Week – The Americas

    Fri 30 Jun 2017

As we have been looking at Pyramids in mathematics what better way to show real life examples than the Aztecs. We researched into the history of the Aztecs and how, without ever seeing the Egyptians, they were building pyramids at almost the same time.

So using papyrus we looked at the Aztec alphabet and the children then created their own scrolls with either their names or a completely new Aztec design.

  • Arts Week – Australia

    Fri 30 Jun 2017

For the final Continent of the week Year 3 have entered Australia. We have split our research into New Zealand and the Haka. We have listened and learnt to the history of the Haka and how it has galvanized a nation and incorporated Pacific Islanders.

We have also looked at Aboriginal Art and how they decorate their musical instruments, boomerangs and more. The children have created aboriginal art pebbles and a fan to keep cool in the Antipodean Sun.

The Haka will be coming at a later date…

  • Dying for a dip? Don’t risk it, Be safe around water

    Mon 26 Jun 2017

Every year people drown in open water around Greater Manchester

    Water safety advice

As temperatures rise, it’s tempting to cool off with a swim in a river, canal, lake or reservoir. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is regularly called to rescue people who have got into trouble in the water.

    What are the dangers?

    • There is no supervision.
    • The cold water temperature can claim your life in minutes – even if you are a strong swimmer.
    • It’s difficult to estimate the depth of the water. It may be much deeper or much shallower than expected.
    • There are often no suitable places to get out of the water due to steep slimy banks or sides.
    • There is no way of knowing what lies beneath – there could be weeds, pipes, shopping trolleys, sharp metal or broken bottles.
    • Swimming in open water can lead to a variety of serious illnesses.
    • There may be hidden currents. Flowing water or swimming in the sea can be especially dangerous.
    • Alcohol and swimming don’t mix – perception and capability are both effected by drinking.

What should I do if I see someone in difficulty?
Alert someone, preferably a lifeguard. Or, dial 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service. Explain your location clearly and  describe any landmarks.

Enjoy the water safely this summer

    • Swim somewhere safe – the swimming baths.
    • Obey the warning signs around reservoirs, lakes, canals, rivers and at the beach.
    • Value your own safety first – jumping into the water to rescue pets or belongings can be highly dangerous.
    • Know what to do in an emergency – ring 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service. Explain your location clearly and describe any landmarks.
    • Enjoy organised water sports in a safe environment – with the correct equipment and a qualified instructor.
