Year 3 Science Ambassador Afternoon
Tue 08 Oct 2019Year 3 enjoyed a visit from a STEM Ambassador today. Elaine Borthwick from Pfizer UK came in to teach the children about how medicines are made, how long research takes, the money involved, different types of medicines for different ailments and how much effort goes into keeping us healthy.
The children then had to create a road map from research to delivery before embarking on making a life saving SLIME medicine. All the slime came out in different colours and the purpose was to show that using different ingredients or in the wrong quantities, the medicine might work or not.
The children were really engaged and inquistive and came up with some fantastic questions and answers. Thank you very much to Elaine for providing a fantastic session for the children.
Some facts which we learned today:
It costs £1 billion to take a medicine from research to the chemist.
It takes almost 12 years for the medicine to be approved after all the clinical trials are completed.
Out of 25'000 components used at the start of the research process only about 25 will end up being used.

Harvest Time at the Allotment
Tue 08 Oct 2019With Harvest Festival time quickly approaching some of the budding Eco Councillors helped Mr Sabatino in our original allotment and harvested, snipped, plucked some of the produce that the children have grown over the last year.
Yes we still have some strawberries and grapes growing in abundance!

Year 3 Forest Schools
Tue 08 Oct 2019On Friday the Year 3 class took part in our Forest School Session creating Leaf Art - first the children foraged for what they needed and then worked collaboratively on their designs producing some stunning finished pieces. It was a slightly wet day but that never stopped our hardy children and they really enjoyed getting their hands dirty as you can see from the pictures! -
Patrick's Fun Run
Mon 07 Oct 2019St Mary's would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Patrick and his mum and dad, Nina and Gareth, for raising money for our school. This weekend, Patrick took part in the Rochdale fun run and managed to raise an amazing £170. Patrick has worked so hard training for the event and helping to raise money with his sponsors.
The school will use the money to buy a copy of 'Inside the Villians' for every class. This will help us with our whole school book study, enhancing the teaching of writing and the love of reading across the school.
Hopefully, when Patrick is older, he will join the school Cross Country Team! Well done Patrick - we are all very proud of you!

WOW Walk To School September Update
Sat 05 Oct 2019The first badges have been handed out to the children for all those that achieved the targets set for Walking, Biking, Scootering, Catching the Bus or Parking & Striding to school.
We have set the challenge for at least ONCE a week travelling to school without using the car and parking outside the school gates or on the roads around the school.
Mornings are extremely busy for many parents but how about the afternoon pick up?
Could we leave the car in the two designated Park & Stride locations? (Morrisons and Victoria Park) and walk with the children?
Find out about their day?
What has made their day brilliant?
What was the best thing about the day?
Chat with friends?
See other parents that we may not have seen in a while?
Take a ten minute breather from our hectic world?
Catch up on the afternoon shop and get the kids working for their dinner?
So the October challenge has already started and the school would love to see EVERY single child earning their badges.
So if the mornings are busy for you, then the afternoons will count towards the badge.
Your child would love the badge to wear proudly and it means an extra ten minutes of quality time with family.
Let's smash it this month!

Salford METS Cross Country Race 2
Sat 05 Oct 2019Thankfully the skies were clear and the weather wasn't too cold and it was the second of the warm up races for this years Salford Schools Cross Country Championships.
All the runners were absolutely fantastic and beat their positions from last time which is exactly what Miss Crawshaw and Mr Chadwick wanted to see. The determination from all our superstars was brilliant with some experienced and some running for their first time.
Well done to you all and thank you for all the support from the parents. The main championships will be starting on the 2nd November at Bolton Road Playing Fields. Further details will be sent out next week.

Year 6 Map out the story of World War II in Europe
Fri 04 Oct 2019As part of our Second World War History topic, Year 6 have been using atlases and maps to plot out the story of World War II in Europe. We looked at how things changed between the years of 1939, 1940 and 1941, and then again at the time of the D-Day landings in 1944 and at the end of the war in May 1945. Children used a key with different colours to indicate those countries that were invaded near the start of the war, those countries that joined forces with Germany, and those countries that were taken back by the allied forces later in the war.
