Harvest Poetry
Tue 16 Oct 2018Last week was not only the Harvest Assembly but we also celebrated National Poetry Day. To really immerse the children in the theme of Autumn we went outside into the playground, listened to the sounds from the natural and man-made worlds, trampled through leaves, felt the wind on our faces, observed the different colours of the day and then returned to write some stunning poetry.

The Holy Rosary
Fri 12 Oct 2018October is the month of the Holy Rosary. We will be celebrating this by holding a Rosary Club every weekday morning before school, where children will be able to take a set of Rosary Beads and pray a decade of the Rosary. A decade consists of one Our Father, ten Hail Mary’s and a Glory Be. Each morning before we begin our decade, Mrs Prescott or Mrs Raynor will read out a short description of The Mystery of the Rosary that we will be celebrating that day. Everyone in school is welcome to come and join us.

Online Safety – Oscar’s Adventures in the Online World
Fri 12 Oct 2018The National Online Safety Team have kindly provided us with a link to a copy of their Award Winning e-book about Online Safety.
It deals with Oscar and his travels through the World Wide Web and the perils that he may face and the best way to avoid, report and overcome them. It is a great visual book that parents and children will enjoy reading all about and hopefully provide even further information about being safe online.
Happy Reading.

Squad Success!!!
Mon 08 Oct 2018After the final race in the Salford METS events, our Cross Country Squad have excelled themselves and as a result both the boys and girls teams came 3rd Overall.
The boys were narrowly beaten by St Mark’s CE School and Broadoak and the girls pipped by St Marks CE & James Brindlay.
Over the course of the three races each athlete ran their hearts out and were brilliant. We had our newcomers getting straight into the spirit of the competition and our experienced runners supported them and showed them how we can get better each week. Every runner managed to either beat their position from the previous week on one occasion or else it was a narrow finish. Miss Crawshaw and I are absolutely delighted with the attitude displayed by the whole squad and the fact they all worked as a team.
Whilst a great result for the whole team, there were also some notable individual success. With everything to play for in the last race, Kian managed his best position to grab Thurd Place overall for the boys. Oscar was also in the running until an untimely fall made him lose ground. But as ever, Oscar has one of the finest attitude’s among our runners and really understand the meaning of perseverance, as he got up and motored back towards the top 10. It was an unfortunate end to the three races for Oscar but will certainly stand him well for the main Schools championships. The actual race was again won by Gabriel who would have claimed overall top spot but unfortunately missed the middle race. For the girls, Imogen cemented her position in the top ten with another fine run and showed how well she had progressed over the year. More to come from her in the Schools championships as well!
The race results are:
Girls:
Ashlee – 8th, Imogen – 9th, Anya – 14th, Ashley – 17th, Sophie – 21st, Pippa – 38th, Orla – 49th, Holly – 55th, Poppy – 61st, Holly – 62nd

Online Safety – October Update
Thu 04 Oct 2018In the latest release of advice for parents from National Online Safety includes Youtube, Fortnite, Fake Instagram accounts and baiting. Please do read below as many parents could be quite unaware of the websites and social media their children are really being exposed to.
NHS Reveal that limiting screen time can help ‘children’s mental abilities.’
According to a study, which was tested on over 4,000 young children, revealed that those who use their devices recreationally for more than 2 hours a day had weaker test results than those that used their devices for less time. The test was set out to record the children’s mental functioning abilities. As a result of this, it is recommended that children should be restricted to using their devices, including TV, for less than 2 hours a day. Healthy sleep and exercise are also fundamental.
Results from the study found that:
- Children who exercised daily, slept well and used their devices for less than two hours a day scored the highest on cognitive tests
- Only 37% of the children who were tested met the screen time recommendations
- On average, the children were using their devices for 3.6 hours each day
Social Media trend: Snapchat Baiting
Snapchat ‘Baiting’ is the term used to describe the action of requesting somebody, often a stranger, to flirt with a ‘victim’ online and ask them to send sexually explicit images. These images are then sent back to the requester and are used either for personal use or with the aim to bully and humiliate the victim. There are a number of concerns about this type of activity, predominantly, the illegalities and dangers of ‘sexting’ and communicating with strangers. Although the activity is predominantly occurring via the photo-sharing platform Snapchat, people are also using other platforms such as Facebook to initiate contact with the victim, and Tumblr to request for a ‘bait.’
Slang Term of the Month: Finsta
The term ‘finsta’ is a combination of the two words ‘fake’ and ‘Instagram.’ Young people may have a ‘Finsta’ to upload content they don’t want to share on their primary accounts, or even to troll others. Whether or not these profiles are used to post risque photographs, or simply content that they only want their friendship group to see, using fake accounts can have negatives consequences.

Cross Country Results – Salford METS Race 1
Mon 24 Sep 2018What a race! We had twenty runner attending the first race on Saturday and every single one performed brilliantly. From experienced runners to first timers – a few got lost and all of them achieved excellent times and places. In the boys race there were over 80 runners and over 70 for the girls races. Bearing in mind this is usually a race for Year 6 (but anyone from Year 3 upwards can attend) some of the placing for our younger athletes was simply fantastic.
We had some very notable runner in the top 10 – Gabriel taking the winning time (even after going the wrong way) followed very closely by Oscar & Kian.
In the girls race there was a fantastic top 10 finish
for Imogen and great support from the rest of the squad with a very special mention for Orla (in her first race) coming a brilliant 57th against Year 6 opposition.
Well done to you all also in tonight’s new look training session. The next race is back at Salford METS this Saturday 29th September – start time for the girls is 10 am and the boys at 10.15 am. Please arrive by 9.45 am for registration and a warm up.

World Gymnastics
Wed 12 Sep 2018Year 5 enjoyed their first gymnastics lesson today and surprised the new coach with the amount that they had already learned from previous sessions. They resembled an experienced Olympic team happily stretching those muscles in the warm-ups (with only a few groans) and then starting on the main activities.
An excellent session with some star performers in there. Roll on next week!
