  • Creative Mathematicians

    Wed 16 Jan 2019

Apart from enjoying the festive holidays, spending time with the family, opening presents and playing with friends, Year 5 were also very creative, industrious and imaginative.

Today we had the chance to play the Maths games created by the children. We had Maths monopoly, versions of snakes and ladders, Marble Maths, Dinosaur related themes and even the chance to win the Statue of Liberty. Some of the children used their technological prowess and used Purple Mash to create their games.

Well done to all in Year 5 and possibly we’ll see enhanced versions of these on Toy Store shelves in the near future…

  • St Mary’s Big Battery Hunt – We need your batteries for recycling

    Mon 14 Jan 2019

The Big Battery Hunt is back for year two! St Mary’s are a part of the UK’s biggest school battery recycling programme.

Each pupil has received a free battery collection box, which we would love them to fill as many times as they can!

Over 4 million batteries were recycled last year – help us to make year two even better!

As soon as the children have filled a box we will make a note of their names and how many boxes they have filled. We will accept any batteries (except the very large ones and car batteries.)

There will be an overall class winner and individual champions!

    Win Great Prizes

As soon as we have enough batteries we can arrange a collection and will be automatically entered in to the Big Battery Hunt prize draw. By helping us to recycle as many batteries as possible the school could win:

    • A 2-night class trip to the sustainability centre
    • A 3-year subscription to MyMaths worth £1,000
    • £2000 worth of school equipment vouchers
    • iPads
    • Certificates and trophies
  • Eco Council – Walkers Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme 2019

    Mon 14 Jan 2019

We understand the responsibility we have to reduce the impact of our packaging on the environment, and we’re on it!

Starting this week our school will be taking part in a recycling initiative run by Walkers Crisps. We will be collecting empty crisp packets which, when sent to Walkers, will be turned into plastic pellets and used to make other plastic products. Although run by Walkers, any brand of crisp packet can be recycled. (Unfortunately we cannot accept Popcorn bags, Meat snacks or Pringles tubes and the packets cannot be folded into triangles.)

There will be a box in the Eco Area (Near the Year 6 classroom) for you to put your packets into. As well as the environment, the number of packets we get are turned into points which can be used in exchange for school supplies.

So not only will you be helping the environment but also the school!

The school and Eco-Council give you a big thanks in advance for helping our school reduce the amount of plastic ending up in the environment. (also remember that only school water bottles should be used in the school.)

A free and simple way to recycle Walkers crisp packets

At the moment, the packaging we use is the best way to keep our crisps crunchy and delicious. However, we’re aiming to make all our packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025. In the meantime, we’ve partnered with recyclers TerraCycle to make it easier to recycle our crisp packets and reduce the impact we have on the environment.

  • Year 6 Hockey

    Fri 11 Jan 2019
Year 6 have started to play hockey this term.  Two of the most important skills of field hockey are passing and dribbling (controlling the ball while running). To practice the skill of passing, two players can stand about 10 feet away from each other and hit a ball back and forth, increasing the distance between them as they get more proficient.  The children had lots of fun – even in the cold!

  • St Mary’s Snowman is complete!

    Tue 18 Dec 2018

We have been all working very hard designing and creating our Snowman as part of the “Walking with the Snowman” trail and we are over the moon with the final results. Our snowman is called “Mary’s Boy Child” and is based on the famous Christmas carol of the same name. He is now on display in the Lowry Outlet and will be there until early January. Some of our pupils took part in the launch event at Media City with hundreds of other school children from across Greater Manchester and had a fabulous time. We hope you take a trip to visit our wonderful snowman.

  • KS1 Nativity

Our wonderful year 1 and year 2 children performed a wonderful Nativity called ‘Little Angel Gets Her Wings’ for all their family and friends. The children did a wonderful job singing, dancing and acting and we would like to congratulate them on their star performances.

  • Fresh Start & St Mary’s – Our Second Winner

    Wed 28 Nov 2018

Today, the second of our design winners, Heidi (Year 5) had a visit from ‘her’ wagon. Her name is on the front for all to see and she also received a prize for such a brilliant entry.

The lorry will be working 7 days a week over Christmas in and around Manchester City Centre. So if you see the lorry, take a snap and send it in!

Last academic year Fresh Start Waste Management & Disposal, a local Salford firm, set a design competition for our Key Stage 2 children. After a long period of judging and from thousand of entries two of our children’s designs were chosen as worthy winners. Whilst the designs themselves are not on the lorries travelling around the area, the new wagons have been christened with the winners names.

Well done to Heidi who has helped the school continue in its push to be even more Eco Friendly.
