Recycle Your Batteries – Help Save The Planet!
Mon 26 Nov 2018Here at St Mary’s we continue to promote our Eco Status and this week we received our ‘Battery Box’.
With an ever increasing reliance on technology we seem to be using more and more batteries and surprisingly many are simple discarded into a normal waste bin. It is important that we recycle all of our batteries so the St Mary’s Eco Team want each of us to start recycling them properly. The box will be located near the Year 5 classroom and available for all. We will keep you updated on the amount we collect. (The Eco Team think that after Christmas we will probably get lots more!)
Here are some facts about batteries that you may not have known.
Nickel-based batteries
What you should know! NiCd and NiMh batteries should never be thrown in the rubbish! They are categorised as household hazardous waste, and they can leech harmful chemicals if you send them to the local landfill.
After recycling Materials are reused in new batteries and stainless steel products. So your designer sunglasses may have once been part of a battery.
Lithium-based batteries
What you should know! Lithium can be highly reactive and can cause fire if it overheats. That is why most lithium batteries contain protection circuits. Because of this unpredictability, it is crucial to recycle them.
After recycling Materials are reused in new batteries.
Alkaline batteries
What you should know Alkaline batteries can and should be recycled when at all possible. Recycling alkaline batteries keeps them from cluttering our landfills. In this electronic age we get through a lot of batteries and it is a good idea to have a dedicated bin for the sole purpose of recycling the batteries.

Fresh Start Waste Teams Up With St Mary’s
Fri 23 Nov 2018Last academic year Fresh Start Waste Management & Disposal, a local Salford firm, set a design competition for our Key Stage 2 children. After a long period of judging and from thousand of entries two of our children’s designs were chosen as worthy winners. Whilst the designs themselves are not on the lorries travelling around the area, the new wagons have been christened with the winners names.
On Monday this week the first of our lucky winners, Imogen (Year 6) had a visit from ‘her’ wagon. Her name is on the front for all to see and she also received a prize for such a brilliant entry.
Well done to Imogen who has helped the school continue in its push to be even more Eco Friendly.
Next week… Winner Number 2.

Road Safety Week
Wed 21 Nov 2018This week is the National Road Safety Week supported by Brake, the road safety charity. We started the week with Road Safety Workshops for each class and the importance of staying safe and being seen on the roads at night.
We are situated near some busy road junctions and busy main roads and we want all of our children, parents and families to be safe in the dark nights. Please make sure your children can be clearly seen and are safe when near our roads.

Gravity in Action
Wed 21 Nov 2018Year 5 have put their Science learning to the task and in a practical experiment devised a way to show how Gravity works with just a toilet roll, split pin, elastic band, paper clip and a paper model of themselves.
The children had different elastic bands so we could recreate the gravitational pull on different planets in the Solar System.
Some of the questions posed were: Which planet has the strongest pull? Which has the weakest?

St Mary’s Snowman has arrived!
Fri 16 Nov 2018After the great success of our bee sculpture and our participation in the Bee in the City trail, we are very proud to announce St Mary’s will be taking part in the up coming Walking with the Snowman trail.
This afternoon our pupils took part in a Big Reveal assembly to meet our snowman and had a sneak preview of the artists designs for the twelve giant snowmen. We then spent the afternoon researching, planning and designing our own snowman template. Then next week we will pull everyone’s ideas together and paint our sculpture before it goes live on the trail around Media City on 10th December, where it will remain until mid January.
Walking with The Snowman is the first ever sculpture trail inspired by the nation’s favourite Christmas story. There are twelve giant Snowman sculptures waiting to be found, each based on the song The Twelve Days of Christmas, as well as smaller Snowmen beautifully decorated by local schools and groups.
