LOGO Lift Off Competition
Mon 07 Feb 2022If you find Space adventure exciting, you may like to take part in this fantastic competition.
From 2022, rockets will be launching into space from UK spaceports for the very first time.
Launch UK need your help!
They are asking 4-11 year olds from around the UK to design a logo that could go on these rockets.
Your logo needs to let people know about the satellite’s important mission of taking important measurements and collecting data that can be used to help protect our planet from climate change.
You can design it on your own, or with a crew of up to three other teammates. It can be anything from a painting, drawing, collage, design on a computer or even drawn with your friends in chalk in the playground.
Everyone who enters will receive a LaunchUK certificate, and there are special prizes for the winners from each region too.
What’s more, the overall winner will see their winning design put on rockets launching from UK spaceports and may even have the chance to go and see a rocket blasting off – how cool is that?!
So, are you ready to join the mission?

Safer Internet Day 2022
Fri 04 Feb 2022On Tuesday 8th February we will be joining schools and youth organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2022. Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers and more, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at St. Mary’s and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Some of the activities we’ll be participating include the delivery of the global online Safer Internet Day activities. These focus on respect and relationships online and has a particular reference to online gaming which we know is a popular pastime for many of our students.
In the heat of battle in a game or through frustration, people can forget how to treat others and that there is a person beyond that screen. A player may think it is okay to be offensive or abusive to an opponent to put them off because it is ‘just a game’. This may be seen as ‘banter’ by some but as a school we would see this as a direct contradiction of our school ethos – ‘We are kind, polite and respectful to everyone and everything within the St. Mary’s Community’. Abuse described as ‘banter’ in never acceptable and we would expect all St Mary’s Mates to behave in a way that is in accordance with our school values and Mission Statement at all times.Whilst it is a good thing that usernames and avatars allow players to protect their personal information, this anonymity can lead to some people behaving as if there are no consequences to their actions.

NSPCC Number Day is coming!
Fri 04 Feb 2022We’re counting down to Number Day 2022!
Dear parents,
We are delighted to be supporting the NSPCC by taking part in their Number Day on Friday 4th February 2022.
Children deserve an equal start in life The NSPCC believes that all children deserve a childhood free from harm but, sadly, that’s not the case for many children. That’s why the NSPCC is fighting for every childhood and working to help keep children safe from abuse. The NSPCC needs our support. By raising money, we can help to fund their vital services like Childline – the helpline that’s always there for children and young people whatever their problem or concern. Making maths meaningful Number Day is a great way to make maths fun and bring about a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude towards it.
On Friday 4th February we will be taking part in NSPCC Number Day and pupils will be invited to wear an item of clothing with a number on it (football shirt, hat, netball shirt, t-shirt) or bring an object into school with a number on it (teddy, playing card, rosette, homemade badge, birthday badge). Please do not go to any expense buying anything new.
To help raise money for the NSPCC, we are asking for a suggested donation of £2 and we’d love everyone in the school to take part in this special event.
The suggested £2 can be sent into school with your child on Friday 4th February..
Each class will be using fun curriculum-based maths number challenges designed by the NSPCC and by the class teacher throughout the day. It all adds up We’re looking forward to all the fun of Number Day and we really appreciate your support. All the money we raise at St Mary’s will make an enormous difference to children today and help change the lives of children tomorrow.

Thursday Year 4 (Sale Sharks) Year 3 (Swimming)
Friday Year 5 and Year 6 (Yoga and class PE)
Please come to school on your allocated day/s wearing the correct school PE kit.

STEAM Success Story
Wed 10 Nov 2021I would like to say a huge 'well done' to Seren and Neiva in Year 5 for their fantastic STEAM Challenge work. They have researched fantastic moths and have rescued a baby hedgehog too! Please read their story below and take a look at the amazing photographs.

We haven't seen a butterfly in our garden for a while due to the weather. However a couple of weeks ago we came across the Attacus Atlas moth online. We were so fascinated by its defence strategies, including the one where its wing tips look like cobras heads! Amazing!

With regards to an animal homes, we have had a couple of hedgehog homes in our garden for two years, one is a wooden house for sleeping and another is a feeding station. About four weeks ago there was a little six week old baby hedgehog wandering around our garden in the daytime.
Sadly, this was not good for the hedgehog because they should never be out during the day so we moved it to the feeding station and trapped it in there until we could get it to safety (a hedgehog rescue centre).
The feeding station was made using a plastic storage box where we made a doorway by carefully cutting a hole at one end and taping up the edges so there were no sharp bits that could harm hedgehogs.
We leave food there often and have visitors almost every night. It only has one floor, however there is a regular trail in our grass that leads up to the hedgehog's home. Sometimes we set up a night camera and watch them as they stroll about and clumsily fall into the food bowls. They're so so cute.
The baby hedgehog was fed and given water before travelling for over an hour to the rescue centre. Isn't it gorgeous. It'll be released back into the wild after the winter season when it is big enough to look after itself.

DINO Day for St Mary's
Fri 01 Oct 2021All years had a special treat last week, when Jam the T-Rex and his baby dinosaur friends came to visit our school. We took part in SPaG and IT sessions, including learning how to make our own short films on the green screen.
Luckily the dinosaurs were all very friendly, and the children were all extremely well behaved. Keep an eye on Twitter to see examples of some of our writing inspired by the day.
