  • STEAM Success Story

Wed 10 Nov 2021 Mrs Kinman

I would like to say a huge 'well done' to Seren and Neiva in Year 5 for their fantastic STEAM Challenge work.  They have researched fantastic moths and have rescued a baby hedgehog too!  Please read their story below and take a look at the amazing photographs.

    Mrs Kinman

We haven't seen a butterfly in our garden for a while due to the weather. However a couple of weeks ago we came across the Attacus Atlas moth online. We were so fascinated by its defence strategies, including the one where its wing tips look like cobras heads!  Amazing!

Here are some amazing facts about this wonderful moth which originates in Asia.

    https://www.treehugger.com/facts-about-incredible-huge-atlas-moth-4864506

With regards to an animal homes, we have had a couple of hedgehog homes in our garden for two years, one is a wooden house for sleeping and another is a feeding station. About four weeks ago there was a little six week old baby hedgehog wandering around our garden in the daytime.

Sadly, this was not good for the hedgehog because they should never be out during the day so we moved it to the feeding station and trapped it in there until we could get it to safety (a hedgehog rescue centre).

The feeding station was made using a plastic storage box where we made a doorway by carefully cutting a hole at one end and taping up the edges so there were no sharp bits that could harm hedgehogs.

We leave food there often and have visitors almost every night. It only has one floor, however there is a regular trail in our grass that leads up to the hedgehog's home.  Sometimes we set up a night camera and watch them as they stroll about and clumsily fall into the food bowls. They're so so cute.

The baby hedgehog was fed and given water before travelling for over an hour to the rescue centre. Isn't it gorgeous. It'll be released back into the wild after the winter season when it is big enough to look after itself.

  • DINO Day for St Mary's

    Fri 01 Oct 2021 S Sackfield

All years had a special treat last week, when Jam the T-Rex and his baby dinosaur friends came to visit our school. We took part in SPaG and IT sessions, including learning how to make our own short films on the green screen.

Luckily the dinosaurs were all very friendly, and the children were all extremely well behaved. Keep an eye on Twitter to see examples of some of our writing inspired by the day.

  • Welcome to the new school year!

Tue 14 Sep 2021 Mrs Raynor

A very warm welcome back to everyone, and a big welcome to all our new families and new St Mary’s Mates!

We are very excited about the year ahead.

It was wonderful to see all the children, staff and classrooms looking so good!

During the pandemic we have had to adopt our approaches in so many ways. Despite so many restrictions by the government’s guidance where children have not had the full range of experiences they deserve, we now move forward. We are determined that our children experience everything that our school can offer so they continue to become confident, determined and resilient learners who are respectful and tolerant of the wishes and feelings of others.

We will continue to email all school letters, any information and advice from the LA throughout this year. Please make sure school has your up to date information.

Continue to visit the school website where all letters are also saved. Here you will find our up to date policies, curriculum information and all you need to know about the school.

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @st_swinton to see what exciting work the children are doing each day!

  • The Mobile FARM visits St Mary's

Tue 06 Jul 2021 Mrs Brown

Today we have turned St Mary's into a farm!

It is wonderful to see the children's faces visiting the animals today!

We wanted to treat the children as this year covid has stopped us from being able to do so many things we enjoy, including trips out and visitors to school!

During enrichment week we wanted to see the children smiling and having fun with their friends, looking after their wellbeing and the staff's! We think the farm has done just that! Thank you to Fishers Mobile Farm for making this happen!

Please see the photo gallery as photos will be added throughout the day to the website (go to the Children's tab at the top then Gallery) and also our Twitter @st_swinton

  • Can you help St Mary's mates raise money for a school pond?

Mon 28 Jun 2021 Mrs Brown

St Mary's school council have spoken...they would really like a school pond!

Mr Sabatino is happy to build this for the children in the gated section of the school grounds. However the materials needed come at a cost, so we hope to raise money starting this week! For safety reasons the pond will only be accessed with a member of staff and used to enhance our science and geography lessons.

This week until the end of the school year, children can enter their names into our draw for 50p per entry (no limit to the number of entries per child) for a chance to win a toy! A very kind parent of a past pupil has donated lots of toys to the school to help us with our project!

Please give your money to your class teacher, each class will have their own pot and an even number of names will be pulled from each class pot in the last week of term. All toys will be displayed in the hall for winners to choose from.

    Good luck everyone!

Watch this space for the pond developing soon!

  • PRESS RELEASE: St Mary's RC Primary School recognised in The Parliamentary Review

Wed 31 Mar 2021 Mrs Kinman

St Mary's RC Primary School has been recognised as a best practice representative for the upcoming 2021 edition of The Parliamentary Review; an independent publication which looks at how key British organisations are responding to different political and economic challenges.

The publication is apolitical and reviews the latest events in parliament from a non-partisan perspective. The organisations who write for The Review are – for the most part – apolitical themselves, although some are unapologetically forthright with their views of certain political parties or individuals. This makes for a fascinating series of articles to suit your tastes and challenge your convictions.

Success for organisations of any size does not always come easily, and The Parliamentary Review is indispensable for anyone who seeks to make a difference in their sector. It highlights significant developments and concerns for leaders up and down the country.

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng says “this year’s Parliamentary Review reflects on a tumultuous and extraordinary year, globally and nationally.”

St Mary's RC Primary School's article can be viewed here: https://www.theparliamentaryreview.co.uk/organisations/st-marys-rc-primary-school
