  • Greater Manchester Singing Challenge 2017

    Mon 26 Jun 2017

Congratulations to our school choir who joined thousands of other children across 9 different parks in Greater Manchester to sing the world premiere of the song “Go to the Park”. The song had been specially written for the event to celebrate parks and open spaces, championing the benefits they can bring for health, recreation and community spirit. Our performance took place at Victoria park where we joined other Salford schools to perform the song live on the radio. We would like to thank MAPAS for organising the event as we had a very enjoyable afternoon performing.

  • Year 2 Gymnastics

Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed their gymnastics lessons over the last few weeks and have really perfected their gym skills. It has been wonderful to see them grow in confidence with some of these moves. Take a look:

  • Arts Week 2017 has begun

    Mon 26 Jun 2017

Arts week has officially begun here at St Mary’s and what a fantastic first day we have had. This year our theme is Around the World Art and the whole school will be looking at different continents art forms each day. Today’s continent was Africa and we have thoroughly enjoyed singing African songs, learning African dances, creating our own African masks and art work. Years 1-5 were lucky enough to take part in a djembe workshop with Mr Noone from MAPAS. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store for us.

  • Social Media Challenge – We need your help

    Sun 25 Jun 2017

Congratulations to Gabriel, Jack and Luke for making it to the final of the National Clean Air Day media competition.  The challenge now is to get as many people to watch/listen to their advert on Transport for Greater Manchester’s YouTube channel.

This is the link to their shortlisted advert:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa4xTAhRjME

Please encourage everyone you know to get involved – mums, dads, aunties, uncles, grandparents – anyone you know, because the more views and likes the advert gets, the closer our boys get to being the social media winners.

The challenge closes at 5pm on Friday 30 June – so there’s plenty of time to rack up loads of views.

    Happy sharing!

  • Year 6 Bakers

    Fri 16 Jun 2017

On Thursday, year 6 had a visit from Warburtons. During the morning they discussed healthy eating, food safety and hygiene before taking part in a practical food session.

  • St Mary’s Lions On Tour

    Thu 15 Jun 2017

Yet again St Mary’s took part in the Sale Sharks Tag Rugby Tournament taking place this year at Eccles Rugby Club. It was organised by Sale Sharks and Cargill who have sponsored the Healthy Eating campaign which Year 3 completed in the Autumn terms.

After just a few extra training sessions the children performed brilliantly with five out of five wins. The teamwork, respect for all and hard work was clear to see but most importantly the fun that all the children were having was very, very evident. They were enjoying the tournament so much that a couple of the players even went to help out another school who were missing a few. Now that’s sportsmanship.

Every single player performed at the top of their games and it was a real credit again to the children and the school. Well done Year 3.

  • St Mary’s progress to the next round

    Wed 14 Jun 2017

St Mary’s football team played against Westwood primary in the Manchester United Cup to see who would play Marlborough Rd in the next round.

St Mary’s took an early lead with a super shot from Liam, who then double the score with a ‘miss kick’ which ended up in the back of the net.

    Half time: St Mary’s 2 – Westwood 0.

A quick response from Westwood put the game on edge as it then became 2-1. With some superb saves and team defending St Mary’s broke and put the game to bed with his hat trick of the match from Liam.

Both teams were a credit to their respective schools as sportsmanship was shown towards one another and to the referee throughout the game – sport leaders of the future!

  • Salford Swimming Gala 2017

    Wed 14 Jun 2017

Once again St Mary’s entered a strong squad in the swimming gala at Worsley Pool. It was a last chance for four of our Year 6 children before they move on up and the first chance for some in Year 4 to really show their strength and speed.

The children performed brilliantly and what a great team effort. They swam, supported and cheered all the swimmers on and applauded all the other school. Fantastic team ethic. We had some great successes with children swimming one and two age groups above and clinching top three positions.

It really shows that St Mary’s has a sporting future across many events but particularly in the pool. Congratulations again to the St Mary’s Swimming Squad.

  • Get involved in Clean Air Day!

    Tue 13 Jun 2017

Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester would love you to participate in Greater Manchester’s first ever Clean Air Day (15th June 2017) which is raising awareness of air pollution and its impacts on health. We want to encourage everyone to think of ways to help cut their contribution to pollution as well as ways to protect our health. Because children’s lungs are still developing, children’s health is particularly at risk from air pollution which is why we are trying to engage with as many schools in the district as possible.

    Did you know?

If we could remove all the man made particles that pollute the air, children born today would live about 6 months longer (Source: Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants).

    How can you get involved?

You can go online to the National Clean Air Day website to download a toolkit, containing ready-made lesson plans that mean you can get involved from spending as little time in class as 1-2 hours. The website is:

    https://www.cleanairday.org.uk/get-your-school-involved and it also contains:

    • Resources for organising a School Gate vehicle idling campaign;
    • Downloadable posters and flyers; and
    • Resources to help running school activities.

There is also a Clean Air Day competition  which involves a group of children making a 60 second advert to help explain the dangers that poor air quality can have on our health and the easy things everybody can do to reduce pollution. Participating schools will have the chance to see the advert screened in HOME cinema (near Deansgate in Manchester city centre) and to win some fabulous cycling prizes. There’s loads of additional information to help you write and produce your advert on the below Ucreate website once you’ve registered.
