  • We Will Remember Them

    Tue 22 May 2018

Today at school all of the children and staff took part in the two minutes silence to remember those lost in the Manchester Arena terror attack, a year ago today. After the silent reflection time we said the Eternal Rest and a Hail Mary for those affected by the awful attack. We ended the day by inviting the children to decorate our school path with colorful bees and positive messages for their parents and guardians to see as they came into school at 3.30pm.

    Dear Parents/Carers,

The safety of our St Mary’s children is an important aspect of their well being within and outside of school. Please read the latest updates from the National Online Safety Governing Body which includes advice on the current popular game, Fortnite and also social media improvements. These are very important as the introduction of the new GDPR  data protection laws are coming into effect on the 25th May 2018.

    Please see details below:

‘WhatsApp’ have announced that they will ban under 16s from using their service in the EU, ahead of the introduction of the GDPR which will come into force on the 25th May 2018. Currently, the minimum age limit for WhatsApp users is 13 years old. Fortnite: Battle Royale

You may have come across your pupils talking about the game Fortnite. As with many online games, Fortnite: Battle Royale comes with risks to children and young people. The game is PEGI rated at 12+ however, there is no proof of age required, which can expose younger children to violent content as well as inappropriate comments from older users. (Please find an helpful parent sheet attached.)

  • Year 5C – Science Workshop

    Thu 03 May 2018

Year 5C welcomed parents and grandparents to our Science Workshop where each class provides an in-depth view of experiments they have undertaken in class.

Our own experiment investigated Air Resistance and Gravity and the effect it has on parachutes. The group explained about the test, the variables used, what a fair test entails and then challenged their guests to make predictions about which parachute would have the greater Air Resistance and why.

It was also a chance for 5C to view other experiments, make predictions and then challenge the results found. All had a wonderful and informative afternoon of Science.

  • Minecraft After School Club

    Wed 25 Apr 2018

Last week saw the start of the Minecraft After School Club. Each week the budding architects and builders have to compete against each other with a short build task. The children have ten minutes to create their masterpieces. Last week’s theme was Submarines and there were some amazing and inventive ideas. The children are allowed to join each other in a world and work collaboratively on their designs.

Last week’s winner was Harry McKeown.

  • Reducing Our Plastic Waste

    Wed 25 Apr 2018

    Dear Parents,

St Mary’s children and community are passionate about our planet and our Eco-Council would like to reduce our use of plastic in school. They are requesting that children bring a reusable drinking bottle to school and cut down our use of single-use plastic bottles.

Hopefully you will agree and our school will continue to play its part in Protecting Our Planet.

    Kind Regards

    St Mary’s Eco-Council

  • The Sacramental Journey continues…

    Sun 15 Apr 2018

Apart from a journey of discovery to Lledr Hall, the children are also on their Sacramental Journey and with this in mind we went to mass this morning at The Church of Y Bugail Da in LLanrwst which is very apt as it translates as the Church of the Good Shepherd. Father Franklin and his congregation welcomed us with great warmth and they were all very complimentary about the children who sang the hymns and spoke to the parishioners after Mass.

We have been welcomed back again in future years so thank you again Father Franklin and the family of LLanrwst.

  • Stone Age Rambles

    Sun 15 Apr 2018

In their History lessons the children discovered exciting facts about the Stone Age to Iron Age. Clearly they have embraced it because their knowledge was fantastic about the vast time period. To build on this learning we took a lovely walk, after Church, up to the Neolithic Burial Site of Capel Garmon which was in use almost 4000 years ago.

We discovered that even after the Bronze Age settlers in the area had ceased to use the site, the Romans took it over and used it for their purposes. We’re not sure if it was a reenactment or the children are just very tired because they decided to try the site on for size, lay down and pretended  to play dead. Some, we think, were using it as an excuse for a quick nap!

After learning about the site and the area the children decided there should be a battle between Bronze and Stone Age settlers with the final outcome….

    ….a draw!
