  • Road Safety Week 18th - 24th November

Fri 15 Nov 2019 Mr Chadwick

'Every twenty minutes someone is killed or seriously injured on British roads and each of these tragedies is preventable. Everyone has the right to safe and healthy journeys.' (Road Safety Week)

At St Mary's we would never want one of our children to have an accident on roads around the school and their homes. We shall be taking part in activities in school helping our young children learn how to be safer and healthier in our community.

The children have already started with their Healthy trips to school and we have had more children Park & Striding than ever before. Remember it counts if you Park & Stride at the end of the day!

  • Year 6 Visit to The Fusilier Museum, Bury

Thu 14 Nov 2019 Mr Loynd

Year 6 enriched our learning in our History topic of World War II by visiting The Fusiliers Museum.  Here we spent a day learning all about what life was like on the Home Front for the men, women and children who lived through the Second World War.

We began with an introduction to family life during the war, led by our leader for the morning, Helen.  Some members of our class even had the opportunity to dress up.  We learned that during the war, some mums became ARP Wardens (ARP stands for Air Raid Prevention).  This meant that when it went dark, they would patrol the streets and make sure that the area was in total darkness, to keep the people safe from being spotted by any German planes flying above.

Later in the morning, we handled some WWII artefacts, organised under the headings of: Role of an ARP Warden, Role of the Home Guard, Evacuees and Rationing.  We learnt lots to take with us back to school!

In the afternoon we met Paul, an amazing man and a veteran who had spent eighteen years serving in the army and who now works at The Fusilier Museum.  He taught us all the Home Guard.  Did you know that the Home Guard didn't only have older men in it, but also younger men who weren't old enough to join the full army, coal miners and farmers (who didn't have to join the army as their jobs at home were too important), and people who were prevented from joining the full army due to a weakness with their eyesight or their hearing?

We also found out that the Home Guard were originally named the Local Defence Volunteers, but that Winston Churchill changed their name because he wanted them to be prepared to attack as well as defend.

There was some more dressing up for lucky members of our class, and we finished the day by learning how to stand at ease, stand to attention and fall out!

  • Arts Award Success!

Thu 14 Nov 2019 Mrs Murphy

We are so proud we have received our first set of Arts Award certificates for our Arts Award Club children.

Arts Award Discover is an introductory award, designed for ages 5 and above, but is open to children and young people aged up to 25.  To achieve an Arts Award Discover, children had to collect evidence in an individual arts log of their experiences of:

    • taking part in arts activities
    • researching artists or craftspeople and their work
    • sharing their arts discoveries

Well done to all those receiving their certificates!

  • Remembrance Day (Armistice Day)

Mon 11 Nov 2019 Mr Chadwick

On this most special of days, Year 3 went to the hall and took part in activities to remember the fallen heroes. Many of the children took part in Remembrance Sunday Activities within the local parish.

We have also taken part in a 2 minute silence and could hear the bells and band playing at the Cenotaph.

  • Lest we forget!

    Mon 11 Nov 2019 L.Johnson
Year 4 completed some Remembrance Day activities. They took time out to reflect on the importance of this day.

  • 3d Shapes

Fri 08 Nov 2019 Mr Chadwick

Our maths focus this week has been on 3d shapes. We have discussed what faces, edges and vertices are and have been introduced to some new shape names such as:

    Hexagonal Prism

    Square based pyramid

    Pentagonal Prism

Part of the Year 3 maths curriculum is that children can create 3d models so today we looked at nets and they had to cut, glue and make the shapes. It was a really fun and interesting lesson and the children all challenged themselves with harder shapes.

Next week we'll be making them out of other materials...

  • Death Mask Design

    Fri 08 Nov 2019

The class have been combining their History topic with Art. We have looked further into why the Egyptians had Death Masks as part of their burial ritual and the children designed their own. Of course they look far better than King Tutankhamun's!

This week was stage one where we had to cut out the shape of the mask and then paper mache the face mask on. It might have been messy but it was great fun. Today we did part two and painted and undercoat of Gold onto the masks.

  • Dem Bones Dem Bones Dem Dry Bones

    Fri 08 Nov 2019

Year 3 are embarking on their next Science topic and looking at the Human Skeleton, Movement and Nutrition.

We had a look at a picture of a skeleton and named some bones and then the children had to recreate it using dog biscuits and chews. First attempts were quite strange - a missing leg, head or even spine but the second efforts were much better.

The class also has a visitor for the rest of term - a skeleton they've named Mr C!
