Spring Term 2010

The school playground covered in snow.School fields covered in snow.Unfortunately the Spring term got off to rather a false start. After returning to school on Monday 4th January we were forced to close for the rest of the week due to the adverse weather conditions. Heavy snowfall over night meant that there was up to fifteen centimetres or six inches of snow over the school grounds.

Staff helping to clear snow from the car park. All hands were then on deck on Sunday morning to ensure the school was up and running for the following Monday. Here you can see some of the staff helping to clear the staff car park.

Science Club

In January, Mr Sullivan began a science club for year 3 and year 4 pupils. It is held every Monday after school until 4.30pm in Mr Sullivan’s classroom. If you are interested in joining please see Mr Sullivan.
Looking at these photographs it seems that they have a lot of fun whilst developing their science knowledge. Here are some quotes from a few of the children who attend the Monday night club:

Children making home-made telephones.

"I think the science club is really fun because you can learn things and you can have fun at the same time. In science club we have sixteen children from year 3 and year 4. Mr Sullivan teaches the science club, we have done three experiments up to now. The balloon experiment, where you have to rip pieces of paper up into little pieces and then blow up a balloon and rub it on your jumper or cardigan. You then put your balloon about 2 or 3cm away from the ripped up paper and it should lift up onto the balloon. My favourite experiment was “The phone experiment.” I would recommend Science club for 7 to 11 year olds.” by Amber

Children making electrical circuits

“Science club is a fun way of learning. We do fun experiments, we use balloons, cups and string. I think its really fun. We have done static electricity, electric current and we made phones which use vibration.
My favourite experiment is when we used balloons, rubbed them on our jumper and then stuck it on our hair and it stuck up! Science club is the best I really like it.” by Lucas

children making electrical circuits"I think science club is really enjoyable because you can do all sorts of experiments. We did some experiments like how to power a light bulb with batteries. We also made these cups where someone puts a cup to their mouth and someone else puts the cup to their ear. The person that has the cup to their mouth speaks, the string vibrates and the other person can hear what they say. Mr Sullivan does science club. I feel very happy in science club because I have lots of fun. I would recommend science club.” by Eleanor

Dodgeball Winners

Children playing Dodgeball.Congratulations to all those in Year 3 who took part in the Dodgeball competition at St Ambrose Barlow earlier this month. It was a very enjoyable morning for all and as always the children were great ambassadors for St Mary's school.

PTA Bring & Buy Sale and Coffee Afternoon

A great big thank you to all those who helped to make this half-term's PTA fundraising event a roaring success! Once again you were very generous at sending in items for the sale. A wide range of fantastic gifts were donated as well as lots of wonderful cakes.

Doors opened at 2.45pm and customers were delighted with the great offers. There was a steady stream of customers throughout the event and once again by hometime the hall was packed with parents, grandparents and children enjoying both the bargains available and the delicious tea and cakes.

Autumn Term 2009

This term at St Mary’s, we have taken part in many events and occasions. In September we welcomed Mrs Raynor as our Acting Headteacher.

In October we had our annual Harvest celebrations, culminating with Harvest Mass at St Mary’s church. Parcels were sent out to our senior parishioners for which they were very grateful.

November was a very busy month. First during anti-bullying week, the children learnt about staying safe in cyberspace. A useful website for parents on the subject is www.thinkuknow.co.uk. We recommend that all parents check this site out so that they can ensure their child’s safety on the internet. E-safety training, including internet safety will be available for parents in the new year. Details will follow shortly.

Tripple jumper Larry Achike visits school. Then there was the sponsored sport event, when past Olympian, triple jumper, Larry Achike, visited St Mary’s. Part of the event included a chosen pupil signing a giant Union Jack on behalf of the school. All money raised was split between school funds and the Team Superschool’s charity.

Christmas crafts coffee afternoonThis was quickly followed by a Christmas craft coffee afternoon. Children from each class prepared a variety of crafts on a Christmas theme to sell on the day. This was a huge success!

Key stage 1 production of Donkey for sale.We ended our term in December with our annual Christmas shows. Here you can see some of the cast from KS1 production of “Donkey for sale”.

On the last day there was a carol concert featuring singing in Latin by Year 5 and a four part version of “The Magnificat” by Year 6. To finish off, the school’s brass group played a selection of Christmas tunes.
