St Mary’s is very fortunate to have space to grow! With very passionate staff and support of the PTA we have created the St Mary’s Allotment area. Last year saw the children from all classes come and sow crops and then watch them flourish.
The aim of the gardening club is to increase opportunities for the children to enhance their skills and boost their development. The direct benefits of gardening with the school are that it improves physical and mental well-being whilst building life skills such as confidence, teamwork and communication. Through discussions whilst we are working it enhances literacy, numeracy and oracy skills.
We also strive to incorporate topics and themes in the National Curriculum from science, maths and geography, to art, design and languages. In today’s society where children need further education on their own development it encourages a better and healthier lifestyle.
We hope the children learn that food is not abundant in the world and with increased costs from food miles, production, loss of valuable agricultural land and deforestation, the Gardening Club teaches about the environment and sustainability and helps the children engage with their surroundings better and develop a sense of responsibility.
In future we also want to open our club to members of the local community with a keen interest in gardening, so that they may assist and impart their years of knowledge with the children and also become involved in the St Mary’s school Community.
