Statement By The Bishops Of England And Wales

In 1988 the Bishops of England and Wales issued a statement of guidance during the consultations preceding the Education Reform Act. Included in this statement is the following extract:

“Catholics believe that religious education is not one subject among many but the foundation of the entire educational process. The beliefs and values it communicates should inspire and unify every aspect of school life. It should provide the content for, and substantially shape the school curriculum and offer living experience of the life of faith in its practical expression. Religious Education is not simply a body of knowledge coterminous with religious studies, not merely to be filled in after time and resources have been allocated to the ten core subjects prescribed in the bill. Rather, it stamps the Catholic school in every aspect of its operations with its distinctive Catholic character.

Religious Education at St Mary's

Formal religious education in the school is organised in accordance with the Salford Diocesan Guidelines. Collective worship takes place in the form of religious assemblies, in class groups or as a whole school. The most lasting teaching will come from you as parents. As soon as possible, let your child accompany you to Mass. Teach your child the sign of the cross and simple prayers.

Whilst at St Mary’s most children will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and will make the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Preparing for the receiving of the Sacraments is organised on a parish basis although communication between Church and parish operates through the school.

Mass is celebrated in school on special days and parents are always welcome on these occasions.

If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance at religious worship in the school, please see the Headteacher.
