Welcome from the Headteacher

Welcome to St Mary’s School. We hope your child will benefit from attending our school. If you have not already done so, you are very welcome to visit the school, by arrangement with the Headteacher. Please telephone the school for details.

Our present school opened in February 1975 as a Voluntary Aided Primary School in the Catholic sector of education but there has been a St Mary’s School in Swinton for well over 100 years. In January 1980, a Nursery was added to our present buildings.

The school stands in three acres of grounds and playing fields. The school has open areas and every age group has its own classroom and this we feel is the best arrangement for the educational benefit of our children.

The children spend two years in Early Years Foundation Stage in Nursery and Reception two years in Key Stage 1 (Infants) and four years in Key Stage 2 (Juniors). Classes are of mixed ability i.e. there is no streaming of children based on ability. Where necessary, children are given individual tuition in certain subjects.

Our Nursery caters for 30 children. The children attend on a full-time basis, depending on the places available and on the teacher’s assessment of the child’s needs. Young children can take time to settle down to a full day in the Nursery so, for a short time, attendance commences with half-day attendance only.

The Nursery offers a wealth of pre-school experiences and activities to the children and perhaps, most importantly, it provides the opportunity to mix socially with children of the same age and with similar interests and abilities.
